A LANGO school for English at Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya
LANGO , language on the go is an Erasmus+ funded project bringing together organisations from five European countries: Welcome Home International , Belgium, Stichting Vrouw en Welzijn , The Nertherlands, Learnmera , Finland , Burged, Turkey and Innovation Frontiers, Greece. The project is developing a web and phone app to teach languages to refugees. The menu and vocabulary items will all be translated into 10 middle eastern and African languages commonly spoken by refugees.
We were contacted through our website lango.app, by Musa Munga, a refugee and the education manager at the community-based organization called Farming and Health Education (FHE). FHI operates inKakuma refugee camp . Kakuma refugee camp is located in the North-western region of Kenya. The camp was established in 1992. Kakuma camp and Kalobeyei Integrated Settlement had a population of 196,666 registered refugees and asylum-seekers at the end of July 2020.
FHE operates multiple projects in the camp including counselling, HIV testing, courses about nutrition, hygiene and sanitation, permaculture courses, and seed distribution to groups.
Musa asked us for help developing English lessons for the refugees in the camp through LANGO and we have happily obliged. The refugees living at Kakuma are from a multitude of language backgrounds and English is the only language they have in common.
